  1. Beeswax lip balm recipe

    I have looked around the net for a good recipe for making lip balm from beeswax. I realized that it was actually pretty easy to do by melting beeswax with any oil at a ratio of 2-to-1 (oil to beeswax).

    I chose to use coconut oil and some peppermint extract to make a delicious beeswax lip balm.

  2. Photos of my winter ventilation

    After reading online, and speaking with others at my local beekeeping association, I used a paint stir stick in order to ventilate my inner cover for the winter.

    I simply cut a paint stir stick (free at a local hardware store) into a few pieces, and then glued it to the top of my inner cover. This should hopefully provide enough ventilation, while keeping the opening small enough to prevent robbing. I also added the sticks to the top of the inner cover to prevent the bees from filling ...
  3. Update on my foundationless experiment

    A few weeks ago, I posted a video at the start of an experiment that I was doing for my own interest. Every second frame that I installed in a super on my hive was foundationless. I inserted only a small wax starter strip on each frame.

    Two weeks later, I came back to check progress. I was a bit worried that there would be no progress or that the new comb would be crooked or mangled. To my delight, the bees had drawn perfect, white comb. Such wonderful little creatures!

  5. Foundationless frames in a Langstroth Hive
