I am a first year keeper from eastern Virginia and my bees are booming. I started with a 3# package of Italians in an 8 frame deep brood box with foundationless frames in late March. It took them about 4 weeks to draw out roughly 80% of the box and I then added a medium brood box. It has been 2 weeks since I add the second box and it is about 75% drawn out. I know I need to add another medium box but I don't know if it should be another brood box or a honey super. I know everyone says you wont get honey the first year and I want to make sure my girls will make it through the winter, but they are kicking some serious a**. Should I add a honey super and let them fill it for themselves and maybe harvest a fourth box for myself?
