    Acme,

I cut mine with a molding cutter on a table saw. A little shallower than the commercials, but sheds water just the same.

    Re: Brood Chamber Dilemma

As long as the weather is warm enough, go for it. I assume you just want to pull the frames and put them in newer brood boxes?

Just pull the frames one at time like you are inspecting, and...

    Re: Vehicle opinions wanted

+1 for a trailer. Cheaper to register and no insurance. I seem to collect trailers like riverrat collects tractors. My wife gets sick of me pointing out nice trailers when we are driving down the...

Re: How to Modify Deep 10's to hold Winter Nucs?

Corrugated cardboard made out of plastic. At lot of the roadside election signs and one day only sale signs are made out of it.

Re: How to Modify Deep 10's to hold Winter Nucs?

I've overwintered in 10-frame polystyrene hive bodies divided with a piece of coroplast.

Sweet! I've always wanted one of the UDLX's with the full cab. Unfortunately, way out of my price range.....

    Re: candy receipe

I find rock candy to be much safer. If your candy gets too soft it will start dripping down on the bees (assuming you are putting it above them). Here is the recipe I use to use. ...

Re: water coming out of hive??????

If there aren't sufficient bees to create heat to keep the air warm enough to vent out the 5/8" hole, adding more ventilation isn't going to help. A 5/8" hole should be plenty big enough in...
  12. Re: Half barrel open feeder, what the heck was I thinking??

Just put a piece of corrugated metal roofing over it. That is what I use for my barrel top bar hive.

Re: water coming out of hive??????

The only time I have had issues with candy boards dripping was when the candy wasn't made hard enough. Was it like clear glass when it cooled, or was it white cloudy-like?

    Hopefully the cluster...

Oh, I guess I missed that in your earlier post and just assumed you where using it for queen mating as it was intended for.

I'm not a believer in emergency queens, just because the bees CAN make...

Oh, you are using it for splits and not mating nucs........ Two frames aren't a lot of resources to make cells in my opinion.

    Re: feeders

Not critical, some simply use a small nail. Nails leave a barbed edge which can be a pain when trying to clean. 1/16" drill bit does a fine job.

    1st inspection of 2012

Did a quick check on 17 hives today before our next cold spell hits tonight. It has been a mild winter and I know there is a lot of talk about bees using more stores when the weather is mild. ...
