iddee,
you need to read between the lines when it comes to news...

It never says they "produced" 5,000 pounds of honey off eight hives. It only states they "sold" 5,000 pounds of honey.

Big difference.
And it also says they have their hives on "a" family farm, not "the" family farm or "their" family farm. So, it could be said they are saving someone that pollination fee by allowing (as the article says) the farmer NOT to pay the normal pollionation fees. It never mentions they were being paid for their services. Only that the farmer was saving money by not paying a pollination fee. Why was "the farmer" saving money and the boys not making it? If the farmer was paying the same fees, he would not be saving anything. Hmmmm.
I like to see stories like this. There are many examples of sucessful business owners who learned lessons early in life by such experiences.
