I got a call Sunday from a man who had had his oak tree cut down and there was an intact beehive in the center of a piece from 20 feet up. He really couldn't afford to pay for a removal after paying his tree service, and it was too cold to take the bees out and put in frames, I'd have lost them all. So I asked if he could help me load the part with the bees on my truck, and he and his son and I did this, and I brought the trunk home. We wrapped it in a sheet, duct taped on then roped on, before loading it. Unloading in my bee yard was a little harder since I was working alone and it was getting cold. But they are here. pictures a bit later.
Id like to see some pictures of that, how wide is the log around? and how long is the section? a friend upstate got a cut out from a tree like that and then made the logs into a swarm trap and hung them in his yard..
this bee log is about 30 inches diameter at the base (and this was 20 ft up the oak tree it came from) Weighs about 300 pounds I think. We used a skid ropes and a guy pushing to get it up a ramp into my truck. I got it part way on the ramp before it fell off sideways (bees all trussed up in it in the sheet so not many casualties). Photos are going to have to wait, had to work today, have to work tomorrow, but I will get some, promise
