Hello
Yes I am a commercial bee keeper ,I guess
It never meant to be that way,I started out catching a swarm in 2004
Nova Scotia needed bees for blueberry pollination ,I started out renting 3 hives in 2005 and grew from there
I did start out splitting too get from one too 200
But bought a lot of packages from Australia and New Zealand that was 10 years ago
Bought a lot of different queens too get the traits I wanted
Now I breed my own queens and sell nucs
Thank you
I have 200 hives right now
What I am most interested in is how bee keepers that have small hive beetle control them
So far we don’t have them in Nova Scotia
They where first found in Ontario Canada about 10 years ago ,in the last 5 years they have traveled about 1000 miles ,
my beetle control is not one of conventional and not practical for your application, my hive sits atop a 2 post stand, I grease the legs and spray a good coat of used motor oil on the ground below to kill the beetles in the ground, as the oil doesnt affect or poison the bees nor does the grease on the legs..I also have those little beetle traps you fill with cooking oil and put between the frames. when I open the hive for inspection a get a few beetles but no large amounts to cause concern..
I use Beetle Bee Gone cloths in my hives, and my hens patrol under the hives for SHB, I also use screened bottom boards and a sticky painted with olive oil so any beetles that come through are trapped in the oil.
