Have been away from bee keeping for 15 yrs. or so. Getting back into it with the grand-kids and now have questions. Regarding fogging, OA, mineral oil, etc. pest treatment, this is all done AFTER the honey supers come off correct? So for me here in Michigan it looks like from beginning of Sept. to March? If I recall correctly honey supers went on about 2nd week of June until the middle of August.
I use OA vapor , I treat early spring , fall( after taking any honey I want and again in the cold winter...today was about 60 out and the bees were very active and even collecting pollen, I have no idea whats blooming but the little buggers had their back legs packed, so thats a sign the hive has done well through the winter..
you can treat with OAV with supers on. Oxalic acid is a natural component of honey and the concentration doesn't seem to go up, additionally if you have bottom entrance you are treating through, most of it's going to be in the lower boxes, where brood and most bees are.
Well I'll be using a Provap 110 inserted into that 1/4" hole drilled in the back of the super. I'm trying to determine which super to use, the bottom or top? I'd think using the top would allow the vapor to settle downward which is easier than using the bottom super and hoping the vapor works upwards.
I made my own OA vaporizers cheap for under $10.00 each and use a battery jump box to power it, works great, I also picked up a fogger but havent used it yet, I have just the one hive till I split in spring.
