Hello, All!

I'm Kevin and I'm from Omaha. I have a new interest in bees -- our family has a small acreage with about 8 apple trees and a couple of pear trees (the land is 5 acres with a small spring-fed pond).

Our yields have bee low and my Dad and I thought that adding a hive or two might help. The trees we have were from small cuttings of my Grandpa's original trees in Wisconsin (they have since been destroyed). A friend of his always kept a few hives on his property for the pollination.

The more I read, however, the more interesting this becomes. I built my own Warre hive. I figured that this would be my preference for starting out. Here's a picture of it:

The darker box on top is the top feeder.

The only problem is, I don't have any bees (I missed ordering them by a few weeks). I've become a member of our local Bee Club and have had the support of BigBear (a member of the forum here) and hoping he'll find a swarm for me to use.

I've been lurking the forum and found the information to be very valuable and the folks especially friendly. I'm glad most everyone likes to share information because I'll be open to anything to get started.

Best to all!

Welcome, and tell Big Bear he is missed. He hasn't been around much lately.

You do have a great resource in him, tho, so use it extensively. He knows his bees.

Hi riverbee,

The farm was between Manitowoc and Sheboygan near the town of Cleveland. Only a mile from the big lake.

Man, do I have good memories of that place but I did get in a lot of trouble there when I met up with a cousin my age!

hi back to you kevin, and WELCOME!
where was your grandpa in wisconsin? great picture of your warre hive!

Thank you, all, for the well wishes.

I forgot to mention that I'm doing this kinda on the "down low".

My wife (of 30 years this October) has said repeatedly that I must start and finish a kitchen remodel before I can get a hive. Well, a few weeks ago I brought a door downstairs to my shop and had her convinced I was preparing it for a new hinge. Instead, I was making the Warre hive -- tee hee! Have a swarm bucket in my truck so if I get some bees, I'll have to do it while she's away at work or shopping. :)

Not to worry, I started some demo today and am making some progress on her wishes.

Welcome Kevin! Down low it is...I get the same from my front,,,"I can't understand how you have all this time for your hobbies (I have more than bees) but you can't fix........" Ha! I built her some flower box stands yesterday but I tarnished my reputation already today by going out on a swarm call early this morning...on Mother's Day! Ha! She already forgave me though...Hope to see more from your venture.....
