I've got a few stings this year; usually because I was not paying attention. Each time, the reaction has gotten a little worse. Yesterday, I was fiddling with the hive when I shouldn't have been and got two stings in payment. I was carrying something, so they had a good time pumping in the venom before I could get the stingers out. It hurt, but not so bad at first. After about 30 minutes, I started to get itchy starting at my feet and working up. I took a benedryl, but it kept getting worse. Then my ears started to throb, my face turned red, and started to swell. It was about at this point that I thought a trip to the doctor may be in order. My lips, nose, and forehead started to go numb, like they'd been dipped in wax. So I went up the street to the hospital, and they gave me more benedryl (IV) and a steroid. It went away pretty quickly after that.

Has this progression of stings reactions becoming worse happened to any of you? Did it ever get better? This is my first year beekeeping. I will just have to be real careful I guess; get a full suit or something and be smarter about how I'm handling the bees.

it has never happened to me but it does sound like you need to consult some medical authority on allergies. the least you might want to get your own supply of benedryl IV and perhaps a epi pen.

It has happened to many people. It is a definite sign to get allergy check immediately. Not later, now. Allergist bills are less than funeral bills.

The epi-pen is a self administered shot of epinephrine. They are available only through prescription in 2 strengths and have a shelf life. They are not entirely risk proof, whence the need for a prescription.

yeah, the ER doc told me that the epi-pen might not be a good idea for me, because for some men "over 40" it can cause a heart attack.

That stung more than the bees.

My brother and three of my children had allergic reactions to bee stings. All of them underwent a two-year series of desensitization shots and for all practical intents and purposes have only normal reactions to stings now. They are cured!
Moral of the story: if you want to continue with bees (stings are unavoidable!) take care of it fast. :beg: Even if you don't want to continue with bees, (stings are always a possibility) take care of it fast. :beg:
    This is no joking matter!

I'm going to see my regular doc this week and then off to the allergist... I hope the desensitization doesn't actually take 2 years, but will have to see. I can't quit on bees!

Re: Anybody developed an allergic reaction after several sti

One of my sons was given a trial "new method" for quick desensitization that was supposed to take only a few days in the hospital. Unfortunately, it didn't work so he had to follow the two year regimen. Any way you look at it, till you are declared "desensitized", you will probably have to go around with an epi-pen in your pocket.
Don't belittle the importance of anything your doctor says--allergic reactions to bee stings are life threatening.:dash1:

In our 3rd (I think) year of keeping bees I was stung on the hand just at the base of my thumb and over the course of the week following had a really bad reaction. Ended up in the ER got steroid shots, and was sent home with an epi-pen and orders to keep it on my person at all times.

I have not and will not give up the bees....I'm just EXTRA careful now ;)

I don't love getting stung and try to avoid them, but any beekeeper must accept stings as inevitable---no matter how careful one may be.

I was told that even if I stopped keeping bees I still had about an 85% chance of another sting. I'll keep the epi-pen on hand and am researching methods of immunotherapy to see what I can do without massive bills.

Maybe your medical insurance covers it.
I'm not a republican. I'm not a democrat. But I can tell you that the socialized medicine we have in Israel is great. Other than my regular monthly health insurance payments, I didn't add a cent for the desensitization series of shots for my kids.

please don't talk about socialized medicine, I really wanted that to work out, but too many people are scared of socialism

Many people don't want those regular monthly health insurance payments forced on them. We would rather buy the ins. we want and pay the rest of our bills on our own.

We don't like paying other people's medical bills.

I won't try to convince anyone in any direction. :|
But I wonder, do you think that your chosen insurance program and the payments you make for it, cover only your medical bills? It was my impression that any insurance program (house, auto, etc) is a pooling of resources (money) from all the insured, with the insurance company betting against the odds, that all claims will not exceed all income. :dontknow:

Too many people incorrectly think that socialism is communism.
But I apologize--honestly- -I did not intend to kidnap this string. Let's get back to stings and allergic reactions.

We have insurance, but still have to cough up co-pays that can range from $20-several hundred. Politics aside, a lot of folks are in worse shape than I am and for them I wish there were a solution.

On the immunotherapy.... we may end up with me seeing an allergist, but I'm not fully convinced that there isn't another way to accomplish the same thing.

I'll let you know what they tell me. As long as my insurance will cover most of it (i.e. most of the cost will be burdened by the collective back of all the other people who participate in insurance even if they don't want to pay for my allergies) then I will get done what they suggest. Then later, when I'm healthy, I'l go back to paying insurance premiums for some dumb jerk who want to have his broken arm fixed or something (like he couldn't see *that* coming). If this makes me a socialist, then so be it. /pro health care reform rant
