There is a large field, probably 60 to 70 acres, of what I believe is watermelon that is only about 400 yards from two of my bee colonies. I read on the internet that watermelon crops require pollinators. The pollinators include both the native pollinators and domestic honey bees, but nowhere can I find if the watermelon vines produce good, healthy forage for the bees. Also, there is another young crop close to my bees that may be cantaloupe. One of my agricultural pals told me that when he raised cantaloupe years ago that he always hired honey bee pollinators. So, I assume bees are good for cantaloupe production, but I don't know if the converse is true. Your thoughts on these subjects will be appreciated.
