This is my first season as a beekeeper and I'm afraid I'm still pretty clueless. I've got a few questions and I'm hoping a few of you seasoned beekeepers can help me out. I'm running three mediums for my brood chamber and I'm certainly not going to have any honey this summer...in fact, I started feeding a 2:1 sugar syrup a couple weeks ago in hopes that I could at least help the bees get ready for winter. I did a hive inspection yesterday and found plenty of capped brood, some capped honey, and about four frames full of pollen. But my bottom box is almost completely empty. The queen isn't laying there and there's no honey or pollen. I'm not clear what, if anything, should be there or what I should be doing about it. Also, despite several powdered sugar rolls this summer, I haven't seen any varroa. I know they're probably in there but I don't know where to get the treatment for them (I don't find it online). I've been rotating through two drone frames since the beginning of July - removing one and freezing it every 21 days or so and replacing it with the other to try to kill any varroa. Now here's another question - I foolishly removed the frozen drone frame from my freezer and then ran out of time to do a hive inspection about a week ago. It sat out and molded over. I don't want to put mold into the hive...any ideas what I should do to clean it up? Wish I had some chickens! (I'm told they would clean it up for me) Thanks to all who post here, I've been following along for a while now and love hearing what others are doing!
