Hey everyone! I'm Will and I live south of Bakersfield Ca. north of the Grapevine. I have been a beekeeper for about five years now, I started keeping bees for my homestead garden, and now I am planning on a permaculture garden to fill out the rest of the property. I have one hive that consists of all medium supers (4) and no queen excluder. I plan to change this year to an excluder, and possibly switch to two deep boxes below.

If you do not have an upper vent, the queen is not likely to lay in the upper boxes.
She will stay down near the entrance.

Thanks for the info, I have not heard that before, but I will keep that in mind when I update the hive.
