a big hello from central Texas. just a suggestion... if you should need advice from others here you may need to narrow your location down to something a bit smaller than California. this doesn't need to be specific but there is enough geographical and weather diversity to a state as large as California that this factor alone can alter an answers quite a bit.

Welcome Alyson! Technically breeding infers genetic manipulation. Bee rearing is the more common practice.
