My wife left this morning to head off to Lunenburg till Friday (work) and has left me alone to care for our 10 year old son.
Without a word of a lie, as my wife turns the corner out of the driveway, with my son and I standing side by side in the picture window in silence, he turns to me and the very first words out of his mouth are .....................................................
"Can we go out for supper tonight"?

Aw, you know it's just 'cause he knows how hard you work. Absolutely no reflection on your culinary skills!

    Dead on! 10-year-olds!!
2 days ago found myself in the identical situation (wife in Tenn.) and that is exactly what my son asked me. Then he asked if he could stay up late to watch the Monday night game. Now he wants me to make breakfast "with good eggs, like Mom"
(Makes me appreciate her all the more though)

When I am gone for dinner the garbage is typically full of Mc D’s bags. My wife hates cooking so much that when I get back the kids are even complaining about eating at the arches! Boy child would live there, girl child is watching her figure.

I can for some reason identify with your son's thinking. My mom is an excellent cook in the southern tradition... beyond her days as home demonstration agent (extension service) she for years taught high school home economics. My father was quite talented as a pipe fitter but was pretty helpless in the kitchen and I can distinctly recall times when my mother had to go and tend to some sick relative and we had to depend on my dad to cook. You can only really enjoy pancakes so many meals a day. There then would be a flurry of activity cleaning up the kitchen just before my mom would return and we were thankful to not see any pancakes for a few days.

That would be my girls. The boy knows my default is to go to the pizza. My oldest daughter would start trying to figure out what she knows how to make (and that both her and the youngest like) instead.
