I'm a Board Member of http://www.stclairsturgeon.org/page-index.html and we had a Membership Drive at the local Outdoor Show and the winner got a free fishing trip with one of us.

I took them out fishing yesterday and we caught 2 Sturgeon, one 49 and one 57 Inches.

Here's the Video then the Pics of the winner fighting his fish!

Nice catch, but why the release? Do you not eat them?

The Lake Sturgeon is Threaten or endangered in 19 out of 20 places they exist. We are lucky to have a legal fishing season for them here in Michigan. You can keep one a year July 15-September 30th between the size of 42 and 50 inches. They aren't very good eating and them two fish are 25 and 37 years old...a long time for any toxins in the water to seep in their meat. If I wanna eat fish I go catch some Walleyes or Perch or Salmon/Trout!

They are unchanged from prehistoric days and are the only freshwater fish I could catch when say I was 12 years old and then my grandkids could catch the same fish when they were 12 years old!

So we have fun catching and releasing them and the photo is the prize!

We have sturgeon up here on the Columbia River. They have been really clamping down on it. We also have a ‘slot’ of what size to be able to keep it and never have got one that small. 8’ is typical and after one everybody looks at the other guy when the rod goes down.

We cannot take them out of the water or any part over the gunwale. This is Mike releasing one and he is not a small boy.

For a while, from the way the boat seemed to be rocking, it looked like the sturgeon was going to catch you.
