Gotten a few letters back from the son. While he has found out the yacht, hummer, and condo the recruiter promised him. Turned out to be a barracks, warship, and a hummvee. He is making the best of it. This young man has always wanted to be front and center and they one people watch or may I say the center of attention thus the theater degree. Not sure where he got that one from the milk man never seamed to want to be noticed. Anyhow I wonder how that is working for him in bootcamp. I have been told you need to keep your eyes and ears open mouth shut and dont volunteer for anythng in bootcamp.

What did he sign up for? His MOS? How old is he? My son joined the Army at 23. I was, and am, pretty emotional about him joining. I didn't recognize what I was feeling at first, but have come to see that it was pride. Lots of stuff went on in the years before he enlisted that I won't go into. But, when he went to be sworn in he invited us to be there w/ him.

About 4 months later he graduated from Boot Camp. Man that blows High School Graduation out of the water, imo.

You better go to your sons graduation or you will really miss something. My best wishes for you and your son.

yes we are going to his graduation. If the boy can right a check like that for our country I willl be there evenif i have to hitchhike. its at camp pendelton and. I do know about the emotions arguements and disagreements shock and confusion that goes into a son joinging the military he is 20 years old. You are correct on pride its hidden at first but when they step on the bus to leave you realize it then. He went in dec 6th graduates in march he is going to be involved with helicopter mechanics scored in th 90's on his asvab if im getting that right. he said something about crew chief not sure but I have yet to find a word in the english language that discribes the pride I have for him and his brother who is 18 that leaves for pendelton in august.

When was the 82nd at Ft. Benning? Fort Bragg is the home of the 82nd Airborne.

I thought I would bump this and give an update to my family of friends on the forum. The young man I once called my boy is doing well got several letters from him and you can see the change as you read each letter. He qualified high on the rifle range hitting the target at 500 yards several times. Not bad for a guy that i can count on one hand how many times he has shot a gun growing up. He starts the crusible monday at the end of that he will offically be called a marine. He has been assigned the job he went in for as helicopter crew chief. Momma rat and I are driving out to watch him graduate march 4th at pendelton. Then the 3 of us are going to give a suprise visit to my elderly 80 year old aunt and uncle an ex marine up the coast in hayward for a couple of days then head back to kansas. Proud the boy set his sights on the brass ring and now has taken it to a level the ring is within sight. This papa couldnt be prouder

I'm very proud of my Son, yes, that feels good. I'm glad he has found something he can do and make a difference doing so. Hopefully he will be able to continue doing so as long as he is able or wants to.

rat, their gonna let him go on leave right out of Boot Camp? That didn't happen w/ my son. They wouldn't even let him drive to CO w/ his wife. They escorted him to the plane and made sure he got where he was supposed to go. I guess some guys end up AWOL between Boot Camp and Base?

It's either different in the Marines and the Army or something. I guess he is going to have a cpl years training before deployment possibilities? He better know what he is doing before he is responsible for the lives of those on board, I'm sure.

I have a friend whose Son was a Helicopter Mechanic. Did tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and then Hawaii, his home base.

Give your Son our best, Proud Papa.

Don't know about the Marines but the Army helicopteer training was 16 weeks. Mostly they teach the basics and how to read the repair and parts manuels, the real training happens on the job and it was 6-8 months (if you were real good at it)before you had a chance at a slot in a flight platoon and then more intence training before you got your own bird. Jim

p.s. Thank both of you AND your sons :hi:
