You put a queen cell and a lb. of nurse bees in it when the q cell is 14 days old. It emerges in two days and makes the mating flight within a week. As soon as she lays a few eggs, you remove her and sell her, or install in a nuc. Then repeat. The mating box is only used for a week, two at the most, until she begins to lay eggs.

That explains a lot.
Seems like it would be easier to use a nuc.

I would be concerned about knocking this little styrofoam box over or the wind blowing it away.

That is interesting something to think about.
