I hear two rules about moving hives: Rule 1. When you make a split, you have to move it and the old queen 2 miles (+/-) to keep the bees from following the old queen and abandoning the split. Rule 2. If you move a hive more than 6' (+/-), the foragers won't be able to find their home. Some even say all you have to do is change the direction of the entrance. These seem inconsistent to me. The reason this is an issue is because I have a hive sitting in too much shade and want to move it 30'. Under rule 1, the foragers will find it after a bit of wandering around. Under rule 2, they won't. My inclination is to follow rule 1 and move it. But I would like to get the forum's input because your combined knowledge is better than mine. Thanks.
