Can anyone tell me what this is? It grows wild in NC. The trees are about 4 in. in diameter and 20 ft. tall. The trunks grow crooked. No where near straight up. Of course, that may be because they are on the wood line, not in the field nor in the woods.

Wow, Omie. I'm impressed. I googled tree of heaven, (ailanthus altissims) and it is an invsasive species in NC. Although the one photo I saw of the trunk in my short research mission looked straight, not crooked like iddee described, but the leaves and flowers look the same.

Here's what I found on google. I do believe Omie has it nailed.

Should not have expected anything less from her.
