ok question...why do they make hive tools red...bees hate red....they hate my hive tool....they attack it every time it moves...before i knew my bees hated red i had baseball gloves with red mesh knuckles...they would walk right up my finger...turn right around an sting me right at the edge where it turned red....i thought about taking the paint off with my wire wheel on my bench grinder....then i remembered how much i like my face without the red metal hive tool sticking out of it...plus i already made that self correcting mistake a few years back with a rusty square....thing hit me right in the nose before i knew it left my hand....ima make my own derwood special hive management device....is there a better design than the bladed crowbar style ???

Use your torch to burn the paint off, if you really think the color has an effect on them.

I was always told that they can't see red. That red looked like black to them.

Most bee suppliers have a yellow one for 3 or 4 dollars.

Mine used to be red but all the paint is gone from leaving it in my smoker to sterilize it between yards. One downside to that is it can be hard as h*ll to find when you drop it on the ground.

    tecumseh:
that spectrum of light to a bee appears black.... black is the color of bears and skunks. so why do you think they might dislike red?

I spray paint mine lime yellow like the Springfield, Mo. fire trucks that i worked off of, if you drop it in the grass it's easy to see. Jack

Mine is blue, but the other one that we have that's red seems to be the same to our bees, anyway...

I never had a hive tool I owned long enough for it to look used. I order them 5 at a time in the spring and by fall Im back to using a screw driver or what ever is handy. You would think I would learn or start finding them in the bee yard. :D

How about painting them according to the queen color code--then you might know how long they lasted
(or when it's time to replace them). :dontknow:

What I can't figure out is why----a black cow eats green grass, turns it into white milk, which we use to make yellow butter?

    Gunsmith, explain this.......

When a cow eats grass, it excretes a gooey patty.

When a horse eats the same type grass, it excretes large clumps.

When a goat eats the same type grass, it excretes small pill like balls.

If you can't explain this, YOU DON'T KNOW S**T.
