I have 2 deeps and two supers (one full and the other about 60%). I plan to harvest the full super within a week, let the bees clean it up and then remove it for the season. I'm trying to get a feel for how long to leave the other super on top before I remove it and encourage the bees to start storing in the deeps. The hive is still pretty busy with golden rod coming in and the alfalfa blooming again. I guess I need to see if the queen has slowed down. How do you tell if the queen is tapering off the egg-laying? More empty cells than normal? If she does slow down, will the workers keep storing the nectar in the super or will they opt to fill the empty cells in the deep? I do plan on feeding the bees before the season is over to encourage the queen to lay eggs for a young generation to weather the cold and to increase stores Also, my hive is pretty full of bees. How will they react to having the living quarters reduced by 25% when if I remove 2 shallow supers in the next couple of weeks? Thanks!!
