Small-time candlemaking

I was thinking of making birthday candles for my daughter's upcoming birthday out of my own beeswax. This is my first year, so I don't have much to work with (just removed burr comb), but luckily she's only turning 2.

If I'm just making a couple candles out of a small amount of wax, can I just roll the wax by hand around a wick? I guess I need to melt it down to clean it; I'm thinking I would roll it into candles as soon as it's cool enough to touch. Can I just use any cotton string as a wick, or do I need to get something specifically for wicks?

Thanks, Dan

I found some candle making supplies at Michaels Crafts last night. They are a chain of stores popular in this area, I assume they are nation wide. The prices seemed reasonable. I was actually more interested in the soap making supplies in the same aisle, but that selection was poor.
I'm not sure, but I think you need a wick.
