Spring inspections....

There are many who wrote on the topic of spring inspections. So let me comment on a finer point of one point...

The first picture is the way I like to feed many of my light hives in late fall. I just place a 25 pound slab of fondant on the inner cover.

The second picture is what happens when they eat all the fondant and you leave that extra box on all summer.

Now is the time to do what you need to do... ;)

To add to that, many times a beek will add a super in spring, but doesn't have all the frames ready. He puts a super missing a few frames on intending to put the other frames in a little later. I have heard many times, "those frames will give them a place to work until I get the others ready".

Well, it doesn't work that way. Bees HATE frames. In a box with one frame space open, they will fill that with natural comb before starting on the frames. NEVER, NEVER, put on a box with less than all the frames.
