Hello, my name is Matt. I'm a graduate student doing entomological research. My thesis topic involves parasitoid tachinid flies that attack Heteroptera (aka, stink bugs and their relatives).

Recently my dad retired and expressed an interest in doing backyard beekeeping. When he told me this I got super excited! I have wanted to start beekeeping for a while but due to unfortunate circumstances (apartment living, mostly) I've been unable to start up.

However, now that my dad is retired, and is serious about starting some hives, I have the opportunity to be his assistant beekeeper!! :)

We plan on learning the ins and outs over the next year, and constructing our own boxes, and next spring we hope to purchase our first bees!

I look forward to meeting experienced beekeepers on this forum and learning as much as I can!

    Cheers!!

Welcome. Best advice I can give is to spend considerable time on this site. http://scientificbeekeeping.com/
Randy is a commercial beekeeper and a scientist. His advice and information has been invaluable to me.

    Welcome! :hi:

You will find many different perspectives here; all good.

Plus, Ohio has great beekeeping organizations, e.g., http://www.ohiostatebeekeepers.org/beekeeping_class/ and Ohio State has a bee lab http://u.osu.edu/beelab/courses/

You are a long day trip away from Kelly Beekeeping https://www.kelleybees.com/index.html

My personal favorite gurus are Michael Bush http://www.bushfarms.com/bees.htm and
Don Kuchenmeister (great YouTube resource) https://www.youtube.com/user/fineshooter?feature=mhee
