I am getting Swarm Traps ready for the spring of 2015. I will be using mostly the pressed fiber pot type trap. I am building 35 new traps that will give me a total of around 45 or so traps. I had excellent results last year baiting with Lemon Grass Essence Oil and a piece of old comb. I set 18 traps in the city of Searcy here in Arkansas and caught 19 swarms. I caught total around the county 35 swarms in traps. I tried the pheromone scent and never caught a thing but did baiting with the lemon grass oil. I use a pot that is 16 inches in diameter and 13 3/8 inch deep. I screw it to a piece of plywood and hang it around 7 ft or so up in around 30% shade with a clear flight path. Hey it works.
Looks like the pot is one of the swarm traps that they sell for hanging from a tree? If so, looks like a great adaptation. Never had any luck hanging them. Guess I know what I'll be putting up this Spring. Thanks. Walt
Congratulations. You did well last year. Do you have a routine when you take the filled swarm trap back to your apiary ? Do you keep all the swarms for yourself or pass them on ?
That is great numbers! I placed 6 out last year in locations I had caught swarms the year prior. I caught one. It was pretty dang exciting. Used nucs with old comb and lemongrass soaked q-tip in baggy.
Any chance you could explain how you make those? I'm not sure that my chances are good of catching any in the panhandle of Texas but I'd like to try.
Okay, so I've been searching the stores for Lemon Grass Essence Oil and I can't find it. What is the best place to get some?
