I realize that this may be subject to guesswork. Guesswork is what I have always done. When should a beekeeper switch from 2:1 to 1:1.? How long ahead of the first expected flow? When the Red Maple blooms? When you put pollen patties on?

When the hive has enough stores to last until spring, you stop the 2:1.
When you want the queen to begin laying for spring buildup, you begin feeding 1:1. They are not connected. One is for storage, the other is for imitating spring.

How about now down here, remembering that we had April freezes last year. Now would give me about what, 3 or 4 brood cycles before the end of March. Citrus could bloom mid Mar. to mid April or not at all depending on weather.
