I installed a swarm I captured in late May in my top bar hive. for the first few weeks they built comb and grew in size. Then suddenly nothing. Daily observations indicated there was far less foraging from this hive than from my lang. I inspected them bar by bar this morning for the first time in a month. I found very good brood including pattern on at least 5 of 9 bars but all of those bares only have comb built half way across the bar. Honey is almost completely none existent. I don't ever see any indication of robbing. I have twice given them sugar water but they will not touch it. Today for the first time I noticed an increase in foraging. I saw eggs that where no more than 2 days since they where still standing upright. Brood pattern is very good and tight throughout the hive. Just looks like there is nothing to support that brood. Any suggestions on how to give this have a boost for getting ready for winter? Overall they strike me as just doing the bare min to get through each day. I am sure that is not true it is just how the appearance strikes me. they wil forage if they have to etc. They sure as heck are not staying at home to build comb. Could they be highly stressed in keeping up with brood? As in just barely foraging what it takes to feed brood each day. At this rate they will starve three days into weather to cold to fly.
