Anyone else experience high mite counts in nucs? This is only my 2nd year of running nucs and last year I had virtually no mites.

By chance I decided to powder sugar dust some nucs. After 10 minutes, two nucs had 65-75 or more mites drop onto the mite board which I think is pretty darn high. I have double deep hives that only drop about 5 mites doing this same process.

Has anyone who treats for mites, also treated mites in a nuc?

You say "running nucs". Do you mean colonies that you bought in 4 or 5 frame nuc boxes and transfered into full size equipment? Or do you mean that you keep your bees in nuc boxes all season?

65 to 75 mites doesn't seem very high to me, but i don't do mite drop counts, so I wouldn't know. But I would expect that if I saw 15 mites in an ether roll, which is how I check my mite loads, sometimes, mostly I just treat since I know I have them, anyway, I would expect to see what you saw.
