ahh waltb we don't use the word laid off here any longer.. the proper term now seems to be 'your position has been deactivated' or you are a 'casualty of a reduction in force' (which evidently gives the folks doing the firing some legal shield against age, sex and disability law suits).
the university here is experiencing a bit of a political purge.
Tec, Not only that, but your local university has provoked the wrath of Ken Starr (remember "Whitewater"?), or as he is sometimes called, "Judge Starr" or, as the "Baylor Nation" refers to him, "Your Most Perfect Grand Excellency".
Imagine, wanting to leave the Big 12 Conference! What has become of higher education?
There is talk here of Texas A&M leaving the Big 12 and going to the SEC.
Ah yea I remember mr Starr <an investigation looking for a crime that pay 100 million dollars if you drag out the looking long enough.
We have no money here at Texas A&M but they gave the football coach a big raise and it is still unclear if the $20 million the football program borrowed (12 or so years back) has ever been repaid (interest or principal). Building are going up here and there and there is a major expansion of the athletic fields on west campus but they are reducing the staff in almost every department due to budget constraints.
Political Purge: The folks Mr Gates brought in to raise the academic bar here now have to go. None must come up (read down) to Mr Perry academic standards (<kind of funny only when you get a glimpse of Mr Perry academic record).
