First, I will say 'heck' was not the word I wanted to use.... Second, before you think I am totally crazy, I am in the Miami area, and our flow is starting.... I inspected my weaker hives this afternoon, and everybody is looking good! Laying Queen in my December split, etc... Then I was breaking into my strong hives...and I do mean STRONG. I wanted to get them prepped for the flow, but with winter still upon us (though it has been 80*+ for weeks with no end in site) I wanted to give them some room for honey, without taking it all. I removed half the frames of honey from the super, and placed them well away from the hive, and replaced them with new frames. I caught a swarm from a condo a few days ago, and decided I would give them a frame of brood and honey, as these strong hives can afford to give up resources, and decrease my own swarm chances. I broke into the brood box, and all was well....then things went south, FAST! I knew the girls were getting pissy, but didn't realize until I looked at the sleeve of my suit there were at least 10 bees stinging my sleeve, things were loud, and the bees were MAD! They followed me for a long time after leaving the hive. I know I totally and completely SMASHED a bee, ugly like...could that have set them off? Was I just too slow? I am also wondering if the bulky sleeve kept knocking them around to the point that one got pissed enough to sting, which started a chain reaction? It got ugly enough that I abandoned the hive still disassembled so they could settle down before putting it back together. (And screw the frame of brood for the swarm at this point, too!) Should I have broken into the brood box first, then taken honey frames from the super? I know I was slow...but my girls have NEVER got nasty like that! That event was the end of my day in the hives, letting the rest of the hives (and me) settle down before I go into them (likely tomorrow). Take a frame of brood first, then mess with the honey super? Or do only one, or the other on any given day? I do not want to ever see a repeat of this...for me, OR the girls. I know I screwed up, just not sure exactly where. Any and all ideas are welcomed by this Beek that feels like a total idiot!! I will also add, that yes, I feel like a dork getting suited up to deal with my hives, but after a couple stings to the face and a trip to the clinic for steroid shots in the butt, I take NO chances!! All I can say is...today??? Thank GOD for my bee suit, or I would likely be in Intensive Care right now. SUIT UP, newer folks! You NEVER know when things will go bad!! So feeling like a total jerk...I seek your input. Thanks all!
