haven't heard of anything but will they burn? I would think like oak chips or pellets, would be fine. Anything that burns too hot and produces a hot smoke, stuff some green grass on top in the smoker after it is lit.

No issues for the bees
Anything that burns (and not poison ivy/oak) is the right answer.
The question should be what stays lit?
I love pine needles mixed with anything, when I am just working a few hives I go pure pine needles as they burn fast and smoke well.
I tend to mix heartier stuff like Oak gulls, wood, wood pellets, even wood chips if I have a longer session (10-20 hives) as they are harder to start but last a long time.
A little propane torch mellows this a bit
