Did one of my usual checks on the hives today and saw something odd. It was a warm fall day (in the 60's F), sunny and both my hives were fairly active. One of them had some non-local bees going in/out along with the normal residents. These "foreign" bees looked very different than the hive bees, which have fairly standard bodies and striped, fuzzy abdomens and typical size for European descent bees. The "foreign" bees are 2 to 3x the size of the locals (really almost 2x the length and 3x the width), and mostly all black, with little or no fuzz. Almost like a big fly not a bee. I am assuming this is a case of robbing? These bigger foreign bees seem way to big to just be drones from this same hive. Anyone care to venture a guess as to what is happening here?
