I am starting out my first year of beekeeping. The only problem I'm having is figuring out when to add my second hive body. I know usually you would add it when the bottom box has 7-10 frames of foundation drawn out. My situation is that my frames all have foundation drawn out on them. I bought out a retiring beekeeper in January, who had four hives worth of frames and foundation. If anyone could help me out with the timing on this, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm located in south-east Michigan.

When inspecting, pull the two outside frames. If they have honey or pollen, add the second box. It's not when 8 are drawn, but rather when 8 are being used.
If the drawn comb you started with already had stores, you add the second box when the bees are covering 8 frames.
