Just caught a swarm of wild honey bees. Put them in a 5 frame nuke box. When I first started bee keeping back in April I waited till 8 of the 10 frames where filled with come too put anuther box on. My questions are how to know when to up grade the new hive from the nuke box to the brood box? Do I need to feed the new hive this time of year? And when do I need to feed an existing hive?

I would feed the new swarm to give them another reason to stay and to build up their numbers quicker, I would move them to a super now and give them room to grow before the cold weather..

Should I wait to see if the qween is laying before I put them in a brood box?

no dont wait, whats the difference?, are you sure you got the queen? if so put them in the brood box to set up shop...you will know soon enough if you couldnt find the queen..
